Just phone them or go down there and explain and offer to pay. Even if they do call the police there is no case against you. Theft requires dishonesty. Dishonest people don't generally return and bring the error to the attention of the loser.
If you do not go back and they catch up with you then that might look dishonest although it is not likely.
