There is a vehicle, registration number R455 FVC, a light cloured Peugeot, which has been made very similar to my own vehicle, a dark blue Rover 620 (registration number XXX XXXXXXX). This has been achieved by the addition of a black number plate retaining-screw in the curve of the final 'C'. This ingenious number plate cloning has already resulted in two Met Police summonses and three parking/driving offence penalty notes from the London Borough of Newham. I have also been stopped and pulled over twice in the last three years by Met Police road patrols. I am not based in Newham, nor is my own vehicle registred at any address there. In each of the above cases I have been able to prove my identity to the satisfaction of the police road patrols, the Met Police Traffic Office and whichever department of Newham Borough Council it is which issues PCNs. However, this is becomiing tedious. After several of these incidents, I made an official complaint to the police, who, after showing initial disinterest, were very helpful. the last incident happened a month ago. This is a worrying attempt to assume the identity of my own vehicle, a reasonably clear attempt to hoodwink the appropriate authorities and a most unwelcome assault on my civil liberties as a motorist. The current owner of the 'rogue' vehicle, a woman driver, is well aware of this, as she was warned by the police about these activities just over a year ago, when I made an official complaint. How do I stop this happening, given that the police in London are frankly too bust to devote much time to this? One of them suggested I inform the DVLC about this, but they are difficult to contact them by phone and there seem to be no categories in their extensive menu of options for informing them about number plate cloning or attempted deception.
