I am sorry but you are liable. You are the guarantor. The tenant hasn't paid. You are liable in those circumstances. There is no defence in saying that the landlord should have acted faster.
This is a sum that he is unlikely to want to lose so he may pursue you.
But you can counter claim from the tenant if you do have to pay out under the guarantee.
