Was he asked about a criminal record on the job application form?
Im sorry about the delay. I had a long day at Court.
If he has accepted a police caution then he does not have a criminal record but many application forms do ask about cautions and he would have to reveal it then.
This will show on his standard and enhanced CRB check but will drop off basic checking immediately.
If its as you say then he should have refused the caution and invited them to charge him. He should also have had the solicitor that would have been offered to him who probably would have told him to fight this if the facts are as you say.
