Dear sir / madam

I am a 35 year old former doctor of medicine, and was erased from the medical register in late 2009 following what was essentially a very unfair hearing.

While undergoing depression and anxiety problems (confirmed by 2 GMC appointed psychiatrists) I made several significant boundary errors in terms of patient relationships, and ultimately came forward asking for help with one particular patient who had taken a marked interest in me. Both the PCT and Strategic Health Authority took a very severe line against me, at times acting outwith regulations protecting my pay while undergoing, etc. despite my having reported the problem in the first instance in August of 2007.

Just over a month later the patient was approached by the police on instruction by the PCT, to ascertain her side of the story. She confirmed my version of events initially, then went on to accuse me of first 1 episode, then several episodes (as the story changed) of my forcing oral sex upon her. Despite no evidence at all supporting her allegation of what amounted to rape (forced oral sex), and plenty to conflict, I was arrested and subjected to a year long investigation by the police. This resulted in no charge, but the police did tear my entire personal life apart (without justification) and uncovered that my personal life (in consensual terms) was messy and that I had had 2 consensual relationships with women who had been patients at a time wherein I was very ill with depression and anxiety, and my actions were very much influenced by my mental health.

Although I wasn't charged, and of course no court proceedings resulted from the girl's allegations, the police used the information gathered from the investigation for a crime I didn't commit, to drive on to the destruction of my career.

The girl concerned was known to social services as a significant threat to male members of staff prior to my having met her and then went on to make a further known false allegation of rape and an allegation of serious sexual assault against males in positions of trust over her since. This was made known to the GMC during the hearing, but ignored as was my mental health.

My barrister summarised the case as disheartening from his point of view as the GMC employed 'independent' panel didn't listen to any of our arguments whatsover, and ignored all of the girl's lies (her being caught lying on several occasions giving evidence before the panel).

Prior to the GMC case, the girl changed her story to one of consent to a psychologist, however, she reverted to the multiple assaults version for the GMC case.

The panel asked her which version of her story was the true version! They went on to conclude that what the girl meant by 'forced' (despite the subsequent rape allegation against another man using the exact same term) was a psychological force, ignoring the fact that she had been asked by the police what she meant as being 'forced,' and clearly describing a physical force.

There is, of course, more to tell, but the GMC opening statement was unjustified given the changes in the girl's story and they humiliated me in the national media, then the panel came to conclusions unsupported by the evidence and ignored all the evidence against the girl's case.

I have a severely disabled 5 year old daughter to support who is very dear to me, and feel that my health issues were completely ignored as mitigating circumstances, evidence was used from an investigation for a crime which I clearly didn't commit to destroy my career, and I have been left essentially unemployable and painted as a monster, when I most certainly am not.

I've been forced to change my and my daughter's surnames as I want her protected, and know that I am not in any sense a criminal, and have lost out on so much time with my daughter as a result of the above.

Can you suggest avenues or an avenue whereby I can pursue compensation for the above? I would dearly love to have my career back, however, it is very unlikely that this will be the case.

I have many supportive former patients and relatives (some were involved in the GMC case, etc unfairly) who are willing to give evidence on my behalf, and who remain angry at how some situations were portrayed unfairly and out of context by the GMC.
