First - he is not allowed to contact the employer. This would be a breach of the data protection act, which he can be sued.
Second, it is not your fault the finance was not settled. If the dealer did not check then he is in breach of contract because he did not act with all reasonable skill and care - I am assuming it is the second dealer who is chasing you?
I would therefore write to the dealer and say that you consider him to be in breach because he did not carry out the necessary checks and it has now taken him several years to find out there is a problem.
I consider that any Judge would dismiss any claim against you for the outstanding finance.
