I'm afraid they probably are allowed to do that. It depends upon the nature of the contract but usually with these things you are jointly and separately liable.
He can sue her for 50% of the ourstanding finance though. She should have used any amounts she gained from the car to pay off the debt and if she did not he would have a claim against her.
