It would only arise if the disqualification were for x number of months and until a further test is taken. They do impose that sentence sometimes but not generally for the type of situation you are describing.
If its just that he did not apply for a new style licence in time though, that does not invalidate his test. He may need to make a further application and he may need to appeal internally. But there's no doubt that the mere failing to apply would not cause his licence to be invalidated.
