Yes, it is. Everybody who sets foot in a police station now has their prints and DNA taken.
It used to be that it could be kept forever but the law is in turmoil now after the recent ruling from Europe of incompatibility with the HRA. It seems likely that the Government will settle on a period of some 3-7 years before they are destroyed. Some of us are not fully convinced they will destroy them though.
