If your mother cannot keep up with the payments, then the finance company can seize the car. They would sell the car at the best possible price and if there is any shortfall, your mother would be required to pay them for the shortfall.

In the circumstances, your best option is to surrender the car back to the finance company and make them aware of your mother's condition. They have discretion in such cases and they might be prepared to write off her debt if she has no income and has no other assets(property, savings,etc.) which could be used to pay off the debt.
