bought a 2l tdci 2002 On test drive all fine...-glow..stopping the car…

Customer Question
hi, i have just bought...
hi, i have just bought a 2l TDci 2002 On test drive all fine however driving the car back the car cut out.-glow plug light flashing the car would then shut down to "get you home mode" with reduced power. stopping the car, turning the ignition off and re starting would fix the problem momentarily. I stopped of for 1/2 an hour for dinner and set off again and the car was fine. the next morning fine again but as soon as the engine became warm this all began again. i put it into the local garage and got P1211(injector control pressure sensor above des'level) and P0251 (inj' pump fuel metering control A malfunction).i have changed the fuel filter and nothing has changed my local ford dealer say injector pump poss valve in pump? or filter in fuel tank what about..injector re program? or camshaft/crankshaft position sensor? one injector is said to be out of line as well? I have just had a baby daughter and have little money left and need to get this right! can you help please. many thanks

Hi there hope i can be of assistance.

Ok this could be a combination or one paticular fault.

If one injector is at its maximum adaptive range, then i would recommend you have all4 injectors recoded.

If the fault persists after this then the fault is likely to be with the fuel metering valve. This valve costs around £100 from Ford and takes approx an hour to fit by an experienced fitter.

However, i would strongly recommend having a Ford diagnostc scan as there diagnostic equipment is far superior to generic scanners. Also generic scanners wont pick up any 'pending' fault codes or some dealer only codes which will further confrim the fault we suspect.

Without that scan we cant guarntee a 100% accurate diagnosis, just advise on the common failures.

Thanks Bob

We ran a diagnostic scan on the car with metering equipment we have tried a replacment valve with no sucess the metering equipment showed that when the car hit 4000 ish revs too much pressure was being delivered to the injector not too little I am getting black soot at this point however under light acceleration with short bursts the smoke is White I do have a miss aligned 3rd injector but was told if the car had dropped an injector this would produce a different p code. Of there is too much pressure is this a injector problem? The car is only switching to safe I would not say stalling is often? Any further thoughts b4 I go down the route of a new pump at £1100?
Ford Mechanic: Bob, UK Ford Car Mechanic replied 8 years ago

I would adivse having a Ford diagnostic scan. This becuase a generic, or even Snap on scanner can sometimes miss or not bring up dealer only or pending fault codes on the Ford diesel engine management systems.

Also i would have all 4 injectors re-coded as these mjay fo reached there adaptive values.

Beofre you commit to a diesel pump, have the fuel metering valve operation checked. This can be removed and sent to a diesel specialist. You dont want to be fitting a £1100 pump when the fault is with the seperate metering valve costing only £100.

Thanks Bob

Hi bob sorry who's was at the ford dealer as I explained they said the valves did not need remapping as this would produce it's own fault code are you saying this is still likely and I need to push to get this done. They did say they changed the valve but there was no change in the outcome as far as I am awaire this was the valve in the injector pump is the one you are talking about a different one?
Ford Mechanic: Bob, UK Ford Car Mechanic replied 8 years ago

Ok, i was unaware tnhis was done at Ford.

Its sounds like they have replaced the fuel metering valve that i explained about above.

I would now try a re-coding fo the injectors and also a PCM re-calibration. This will eliminate any software problems.

Thanks bob
