1993 240 B200F. when external temp is below -5C hard cold…

Customer Question
Hi, 1993 240 B200F...

Hi, 1993 240 B200F. when external temp is below -5C hard cold start and revs up to 1200 - 1500 for 30 seconds then ecu pulls revs down to find idle but revs drop too low and engine stalls out. Stall can be held off by small throttle inputs to keep revs up. Have found error codes for air mass meter burn off signal and both lean and rich running. suspect either vacuum leak or wiring problem. Any other ideas welcome.

Mechanic's Assistant: Do you have a scan tool to read the codes?

Codes are read from the old style onboard LED fault module in engine bay passenger side. only stores three codes at a time. Have cleared and re-checked codes several times. No other sensors or systems producing codes.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your 240 yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes fixing myself. Have removed and cleaned and refitted mass air flow meter and air idle control, checked throttle body clean and throttle position switch correctly adjusted. Have hunted for vacuum leaks but found none. have cleaned electrical connectors, changed plugs and distributer cap and air filter. Have checked both fuel pumps working.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Once warmed up idle sits at 750 but with continuous surge of 50-100 revs as if unable to find stable flow. Also may be a small leak in exhaust system before the O2 sensor and CAT.

My name is ***** ***** I am a professional here at Just Answer. I noticed that your question had not received a response and thought I would see if you still need help with this.I apologize for the delay and I hope I can still assist you with this here.

From what you have described here this does sound like a possible vacuum leak causing this fault needing to be inspected and repaired.I would inspect all vacuum hoses for any loose or broken hoses needing to be replaced or reconnected. If no visible leaks are found then the intake will need to be smoke tested to locate any leaks.Smoke is injected into the intake and any leaking out in any areas it shouldn't leak out is the source of the leak.Intake gasket internal leaks are common as well needing to be replaced.

If more help is needed, use the reply tab to continue our conversation. If no further assistance is needed, kindly rate my service, your 5-star rating is appreciated ( should be a link to click on here or above). You can rate at any time and we can continue to work on your question as this will not close out your question.I work on delivering the best answer and help here but in some cases, it can be difficult to do without seeing the vehicle.

Thanks Pete
