HELP!!!
I have a land rover 2.4TDCI. I get black smoke on acceleration. It belches with a very slight lag. I also get light black smoke some times whilst idling. I have a bearmach diagnostic tool which says there are no DTCs. I have done the following
1. Changed the MAP
2. Changed Camshaft sensor
3. Cleaned crank shaft sensor
4. Changed oil, fuel filters, air cleaner
5. Checked hoses
6. Replaced camshaft kit, injector washers
7. Replaced EGR and gasket
The engine seems to be consuming some oil. I use 5w 30. The engine runs smoothly still!

Mechanic's Assistant: Does the vehicle stall at low speeds? Does it sputter?

No it does not

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Land Rover?

2.4 TDCI Puma. its a 2009 Defender 90

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Defender 90 yourself? What have you tried so far?

I am all the way in Africa. There is little support. I work on the car with a local mechanic

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

No. thats about it Pearl

Hi There,

Seems like you have checked most things.

Black smoke means a rich fuel mixture. Unburnt fuel.

With a diesel this is usually attributed to air starvation, so you give more accelerator pedal for more power and hence you add further fuel.

Primarily I would assume that there is a restriction on the air intake, pipes, or a potential air leak.

In some instances there may be a very small pin hole or crack in one of the pipes - which may not be easily visible when first inspected.

I would also check that the intercooler is not cracked, split or blocked with excess engine oil build up.

If you are still confident no pipes are split or blocked, then I would grab one of the turbo intake pipes - and ask an assistant to rev the engine - to see if you can feel the pipe swell. This would confirm the turbo is operating.

Also check on the induction side of the turbo system that no pipes are collapsing in on themselves - it may be necessary to remove them - as sometimes the double skinned pipe - has a problem with the inner skin collapsing under induction.

This will not be visible from the outside in some cases. - Hence the pipe removal.

The other check I would do is inspect the turbo turbine vanes - for damage, and excessive turbine spindle movement both in and out and laterally up and down.

If this is excessive - then your turbo will not be operating efficiently - thus not providing the correct amount of air - and therefore - leaving excessive fuel to not burn sufficiently - causing black smoke.

The fact that there are no DTC codes - indicates that this is a physical mechanical cause rather than electrical circuitry, so there should be an outcome of some mechanical fault being found - such as a split pipe or blockage or poor condition turbo.

I hope this helps you sort your vehicle.

Regards

JagLandy
