1987 760 Turbo B230FT - 101K miles
- Quit running in August as it was not getting fuel
- Replaced perfectly good fuel relay, fuel filter, and fuel pump :)
- Narrowed it down to Hall Effect sensor on distributor
- Replaced distributor, plugs and wires
- Car starts and idles but has no power to move above 10MPH
- Trying to set BTDC to 12 degrees but can only get it to 25-30 Degrees when distributor is max rotated
- Timing belt was not touch at any point.
- Stationed in Germany and have access to the auto hobby shop but the gear heads there were also stumped
Any Ideas?

Hi, my name is***** sure sounds like a timing belt issue. Have you actually inspected the cam timing and verified that everything was lined up at TDC?

Marty, I took all the fasteners off the upper cam cover but could not figure out how to completely remove so I just peeled it back a bit. I did see that the cam shaft mark was TDC when the pulley notch was at TDC. I could see not down to the crankshaft and aux marks.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner I got really busy in the shop and could not get back to you. If the piston is at TDC and the cam gear lines up with the notch I'd have to say your distributor is assembled wrong. I would normally pull #1 spark plug and use a long screwdriver in the #1 hole to confirm that the piston was really at TDC when the crank pulley is at the TDC mark. What is not making sense is that if you are 25° - 30° BTDC it shouldn't be running sluggish. If you are ATDC it makes sense.

My next step is to fully take off the timing belt cover to see if all three marks are correctly aligned at TDC. Hopefully, I will be able to see all the marks with all the things in the way. I will also take #1 spark plug out and confirm TDC as well as reremove distributor cap to ensure rotor is at #1 spot. The car idles smoothly but when then accelerater is depressed, no power to move forward. I'll let you know how it goes this weekend.

Sounds good. If it revs up in neutral but won't move in drive I'm wondering if you might have a transmission problem or a brake dragging.
