Hi we have a...

Hi we have a Astra 2007 Turbo Desiel that wont start we are looking at the battery we have tried charging it but it wont hold the charge. Also once started it tents to rev over 1000 in idle.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded?

Yes we have even ran a wire brush over them.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Turbo yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes at this stage, as the battery light came on the other day. Tried charging battery for over 24 hours. Next step is to buy new battery but do you yhink this would fix the over reving problem?

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Running over 1000 revs at idle initially wouldn't be a cause for concern if the vehicles engine is cold and only recently been started.

If the battery on the vehicle is discharged, the alternator if it is working well, would be placed under increased load while the engine is running, leading to electro magnetic resistance of the alternator, to over come this the engine ecu would raise the revs to compensate for the extra strain on the engine.

I hope in your case the light is a warning of the failed battery and not a sign that the alternator is failing.

To answer directly your question, it is possible that a failed discharged battery can lead indirectly to a higher idle speed due to the increased strain on the alternator, if it is working properly.
