Hi - I think I...
Hi - I think I have a similar issue. I’m driving a 2006 RAV4 2.0l manual that I purchased three weeks ago. I’ve had 4 brand new matching tyres fitted last week. While driving on a motorway today, the ‘Check 4x4’ error came up. There was no change in performance and I was able to get home with ease. The AA have performed a diagnostic, which showed code C1299. The patrolman checked tyre inflation - 3 were at 31psi - one was at around 34psi. He reset the code and I’ve now driven around 25 miles and haven’t received anymore error messages. Could that discrepancy in tyre pressure have triggered the error code? Failing that, he seemed to think it could be a sensor? Does that sound likely? I’m concerned it’s the ECU or Cat. Any thoughts greatly aporeciated.

Hi im kevin its possible this could be the cause .the car is monitoring for slip withing the transfer system and anything over 3% slip difference from side to side of front to rear without anything causing it .ie cornering .it will illuminate fault light and shut system down

Hi Kevin - thanks for the reply. If, for arguments sake, it’s not the psi but a sensor, or the ECU or the electromagnetic coupling, would I have experienced any other error warnings, or driving issues? It does seem a coincidence I’ve had the tyres changed last week and had not experienced any issues during the 300 plus miles I’d covered in past two weeks since I bought the car. I’ve also read that this error could indicate a damaged CAT, or ECU - or even a faulty fuel cap! If it is ECU or CAT, could I have expected the warning light to come on again when I drove the car? I’m not sure if this is related, but I did notice that when I filled the tank last night (only £13 worth to top it up before a planned 260 mile trip today) the mileage range did not change. Previous fillings gave a range of around 320 miles on a full tank. This time it stayed at the 260 mark, which was range before I topped up. Could this be related?

Ok this light wont be engine related at all so this rules out you cat and ecu .this it to do with the monitoring system for the*****.it could be a failing wheel speed sensor but i would continue to drive if warning comes back then investigate further as ive seen tyres cause this befor e

Thanks Kevin - relief to hear it’s not CAT or ECU! I bought the car with 75k on clock a couple of weeks ago - and you never know at that age what you’re getting yourself into. I’m getting it checked by a garage next week - last question - is a wheel sensor likely to break the bank??

Wheel speed sensors are around £100 not the end of the world . These cars are normally bulletproof if im honest
