Customer Question
I have a lot...

I have a lot of smoke from my exhaust when I start up my 2004 Audi 1.8t. I'm losing a lot of coolant, and no oil. My research suggests its the oil cooler. Is there any way I can confirm this?

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you ever replaced the gaskets? Maybe the hoses?

I've not had the car long. All gaskets and hoses appear original. It's had a new exhaust, and all other major mechanical components replaced. There's no loss in performance, just a lot of smoke on start up and a rough idle initially when the key is turned.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your 200 yourself? What have you tried so far?

I'll be handing it to a specialist to fix. I'm seeking from you the assurance that it'll be a common problem, and hopefully not the head gasket!

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

The car's done 104,000 miles and above average condition. Service history is complete with all major parts replaced when needed. NO sign of water in engine oil, it just loses a lot of coolant.

Does the check engine light flash?

Ask Your Own UK Car Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Not at all. All dashboard display lights are normal, except for the coolant warning light which comes on when the level drops.

All I require here is a potential solution by illimination. Is there a way of testing if it could be the oil cooler maybe?
UK Auto Mechanic: Gunvir Singh,

If the cooler is leaking it will have evidence of oil and coolant mixed. If there is coolant present in the combustion chamber that means the head gasket is leaking.
