Hi. Wife's Vauxhall Meriva...

Hi. Wife's Vauxhall Meriva 05 reg. Has been driving fine. Parked up last night but then needed to move it again. No response from ignition. All dashboard lights staying on when key removed so I disconnected the battery. Re connected this morning but all the ignition key does now is turn the radio on. Car and spanner symbol flashing , which I always thought was the service indicator. Problem is obviously worse than a late service!

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuses? The dashboard bulbs?

Pulled out some of the fuses to see if it made any difference but it didn't. Should I take them all out? I don't have the schematic so don't know what fuses correspond to what action

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '05 Vauxhall Marian?

That's a good question. I will have to find the paperwork for exact model but it's a 1.2 litre. (possibly Life)

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?

Swearing! Was just trawling the internet in the hope of finding a possible cause. Will probably have to get it to a garage but I just wanted a heads up so I could gauge a possible cost of repair

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

No thanks

Hi im kevin have you got a voltmeter to check battery voltage ?

Ask Your Own UK Car Question
Customer reply replied 5 years ago
No, but it's a new battery. Only fitted it about three weeks ago
UK Auto Mechanic: Kevin, UK Car Mechanic replied 5 years ago

Ok the fact you have dash light issues i would start by checking battery voltage .if voltage dips low it could cause your type of issue

Ask Your Own UK Car Question
Customer reply replied 5 years ago
If I could get hold of a voltmeter to check and it is dipping, how do I resolve the issue? Or am I still going to have a mechanic to it?
UK Auto Mechanic: Kevin, UK Car Mechanic replied 5 years ago

With an issue like this we just need to confirm if battery has enough charge .it could be something has drained battery down .it could be as simple as charging battery

Ask Your Own UK Car Question
Customer reply replied 5 years ago
Well the car has been running fine up til that point and it was only parked for around five minutes before my wife went back to it so I would be surprised if it has drained. If it has I'm guessing there's an underlying problem?
UK Auto Mechanic: Kevin, UK Car Mechanic replied 5 years ago

It could be a bad earth are battery terminals tight ?

Ask Your Own UK Car Question
Customer reply replied 5 years ago
They were until I disconnected it last night because the dashboard lights stayed on and I thought it would flatten the battery if I left it. When I reconnected it this morning the lights all came on again but there is absolutely no response from the ignition other than the radio coming on as well
UK Auto Mechanic: Kevin, UK Car Mechanic replied 5 years ago

ok it sounds alot like ignition switch has failed .this is not unusual on vauxhalls basically means that when you put key in it doesnt always actaually make contact with switch

Customer reply replied 5 years ago
not something I could fix myself? Expensive?
UK Auto Mechanic: Kevin, UK Car Mechanic replied 5 years ago

Dependent on skill level the ignition barell would need to be removed which can be tricky and fiddly .not overly expensive a couple hundred worst case
