Can a 1999 mercedes g500 SWB, 5 speed, be fitted with a 7G Tronic transmission? The idea would be better fuel economy and acceleration. Thank you

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

It would be physically possible to install the transmission without too much effort but controlling it would prove quite difficult if possible at all. The transmission is controlled by it's own module. The one in your car would need to be replaced with one for the seven speed trans to be able to control it, but your car isn't designed to operate it. The engine controller software wouldn't interface or have a way of knowing that this trans had been installed. If you could find someone to do the custom programming work and modifications to physically install the trans then it could be done, but the cost of having it converted to the seven speed trans would be cost prohibitive versus the small amount of gain.
