Will a 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 automatic transmission

Customer Question

Will a 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 automatic transmission (Transmission CODE D) fit a 2000 model Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 Northface with the same transmission code D? Both vehicles are UK spec.
Need to know ASAP if these transmissions are interchangeable, I'm told by the seller of the transmission that they are.

I've uploaded photos of both vehicles VIN plates in case it helps.

Hello and welcome to Justanswer!

I'm not showing these two to be interchangeable in a used part interchange or by factory new part numbers. 1999-2001 show interchangeable but the 1997 transmission does not show to be interchangeable with any other year.

What's the differences between the transmissions, I assumed with them having the same code on the VIN and been mounted to the same engine they would?I take it they would physically fit but the electronics wouldn't match up?

Also can you confirm what transmission would be factory fitted to the 2000 4.0 Explorer? 4R55E 5R55E ?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 1 year ago.

It's a 5R55E.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to know exactly what the differences are. The transmissions are the same type but will not directly interchange, it may be electronics, gear ratios, mounting differences, etc.

just to confirm I'm looking for a 5R55E transmission from a vehicle registered between 1999-2002 fitted with a 4.0 V6 to be a direct fit.

You'll need a transmission from a 1999-2001 model year vehicle with the E engine code.
