Check the wires to the transfer case stepper motor- the CAN bus wires are a twisted pair, both are orange with a tracer stripe. Does the Touareg feel like it is skipping or hopping when turning sharply at slow speeds, like parking? Like the transfer case is binding up?

no vehicle has no issues other than transmission fault on display

Do you know the fault code that is stored?

OK- the control module for the transfer case system is under the passenger seat, you need to inspect the wiring there and make sure the connector and pins are OK, just to be safe I like to apply some dielectric grease to the connector before putting it back in place. You should find the twisted pair of orange wires going to this module, it is saying that one of the two is not communicating, so it is relying on just the one signal with no cross-comparison
