Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
The oil light will come on when oil pressure is dangerously low. This can be from bearing wear, a failed oil pump, or a restricted pump pickup.
Having found metal in the oil filter you can be pretty certain there is rod and/or main bearing damage. This damage could have been the issue causing low pressure or it may be the result of running the engine with low pressure. Regardless, the oil pan will need to be removed to inspect the pump pickup and then inspect the bearings. It's possible that you may be able to get by with just replacing the bearings if the crank isn't damaged, but you may need to replace the engine depending on how much damage there is.
