Thanks for your prompt reply. Am out of town right now and be returning on 2 June. I presume VIN is the Vehicle Identification Number. Be sending you the last six digits as soon as I am back home. For the video it is difficult because very seldom does the problem occur and not in a much visible place. Anyway, as I mentioned it does not get any worse or any better. Regarding the intensity of the sound all I can say is that it quite audible on the outside when the engine is not running and it would be like something non-metal banging on the fuel tank.

Hmmm... must say I suspected something like this: contracting-expansion of the tank. Point is: is it as innocent as it sounds? If the tank heats up with fuel inside... is it normal? Is it possible that some other part in contact with the tank expands-retracts and bangs on the tank during the process? The exhaust for instance? This is pure guesswork of course.

Apologies for the late reply; was out of town until this morning.

The id no. displayed at the bottom-right part of the windscreen

reads as: SAJAA03S021M62863. For your info I would add that

the vehicle was purchased in Milan, Italy and that it is left-drive.

I went under the car this morning and saw the grey-blue shield

of the tank. I banged on it at several places and in some places

the resulting thud was not dissimilar to that I hear when the engine

has stopped after being warmed up. But am not sure of course.

Good evening Richard,

I think the reason might be inside the tank. I noticed that when the tank is nearly empty no sound comes out. When it is half full there is always a bang but less loud than when the tank is full by, say, 75%. Is it possible that the petrol inside the tank creates gases that escape rather abruptly with a bang on the tank. Or is it the petrol pump or the floating mechanism. Am saying all this because the sound seems to depend on how full the tank is.
