if this is an automatic gearbox then 1st thing to do is check its oil level - it may have a dipstick in which case you can top it up through the dipstick tube
if there's no dipstick then you'll have to warm the gearbox a little and then remove the fill plug on the side of the transmission and the oil should just run out - if it doesn't add more until it does
if its a manual gearbox then its possible that the clutch is failing - if the engine rpm seems to shoot off or rev up without the car accelerating then this is likely the reason
you will also get a 'hot' smell with a burnt clutch
