vectra 1.8 vvt rattles at top end for 1 or 2 secs on first start up then everything fine

this could either be a valve lifter pumping up or another possibility is the variable valve timing system as this does rely on oil pressure to correctly syncronise your vvti pulley on the end of the camshaft. If the valve or oilway has become partially blocked up then its possible the pulley is rattling about and producing the noise until its up to pressure

In both cases you stand a good chance of resolving it by applying an oil flushing treatment, running the engine until hot and then change the oil for fresh with a new filter
