If the lights are still strong and the dashboard light are functioning, does it mean that there is some life in the battery, but just not enough to start the car?

Yes, it doesnt take much power to turn the dashlights on,

but if your battery is under 11.5volts, it wont have enough to turn the starter motor.

With yours being a diesel it will draw more from the battery,

Hope this helps

So I can remove the battery, charge it up and refit it and that will be OK until I can get a replacement battery?

Remove and recharge,

Once refitted drive to a auto electrical shop and ask for a FREE battery test,

It may be fine using it during the day, but left overnight it could fail to start again
