Topping up the oil too on any diesel engine can cause all sorts of problems as the engine tries to cope with the excess oil level.
The engine fitted to your car M47TU is very succeptable to oil problems specifically with oil getting into the breather system, blocking it and causing excessive smoke due to excess crankcase pressure.
On your car there is also a crankcase breather filter located in the camshaft cover at the rear it is very prone to problems. This unit must be renewed every 3 oil changes and is often overlooked but can be the cause of many engine problems on these cars.
Specifically it can trigger turbo problems as the crankcase pressure gets too high and forces oil back from the turbo seals , in some cases oil can be blow out from the dipstick as well.
To access and replace this filter you must remove the scuttle panel over the engine and at the rear you will see a small unit retained by four 5mm allen bolts. The breather filter is inside here and is almost certainly blocked now. This filter is currently only available from a BMW dealer and has been modified a few times.
Once you have done this and your oil level is correct the engine may well stop smoking as long as no further damage has been caused.
