Are you aware if Mercedes...

Are you aware if Mercedes are aware of a difficulty with their 722.6 automatic transmissions. I heard it said that the statictic as regards XXXXX XXXXX this kind of transmission is that one in every 3 of themm are giving problems. I bought a new SL 350 in 2004 and I have a problem with my transmission with oil leaks and gear sticking in first gear. I would appreciate your advice.

Hello and Welcome to justanswer...

I am aware of this and many other , different faults with the auto transmission units on the Mercedes range.. its quite depressing really just how many of these vehicle have such problems.

On the specific problem you have, the principle you mention is known about.. and it does just that .... the oil works its way up the wiring loom to the Transmission ECU.. the electronic control unit and if not checked / sorted can cause "message" or transmission issues between the control unit and the unit... even rendering the ecu useless in severe cases.

The way to go about this is to see first though if that is whats happened.. That in itself is a job for either an Auto Transmission specialist or the dealers themselves, whichever you prefer to use.. If its not that thats causing your problems .. then you need to be looking further...and ideally , the first step is to have proper diagnostics run on the electronic and control side of the system..again, either of the above would do that ..and that has to be the first stage of diagnosis really in any case... and then move forward from there depending on whats found..

So that needs to be your next step to start sorting the issues that you have... I would honestly recommend using an Auto Transmission specialist , they will be au fait with your problems - or should be - and will likely , ultimately , be cheaper that a dealer..

Thank you for what you have outlined for me in your reply but what I am trying to find out is it a well known problem in the trade or is it an isolated matter. My MB agent was very off hand about the problem firstly denying its existence ie the gear sticking, and then passed the oil leak off as being a trivial issue.

Would you be aware that is as common as I have said as being a one in three problem issue with the 722.6 transmissions?

I am trying to `convince ` MB to face up to this as being their problem not mine as they are suggesting over the years from the very beginning.

Hello again - Thank you for your reply...

Im sorry if I wasn't to clear there with my reply.. Okay... I have to say, Ive not heard mention of the problem being called the principle specifically as you called it - ( I have a very good working relationship with a MB official - I will ask him about this for you If you like .. ) .... But as far as the actual problem goers - yes it exists... and I have dealt with it myself on more than one occasion - but that doesn't meant you are going to be able to convince your local dealer of it Im afraid.. it just depends on how affable they are. I couldn't give you actual statistics as to the 1/3 but again I can have a quite discussion about that if you like... As I said , the Benz transmissions are somewhat troublesome in several areas for sure - and that is just one of them what you are experiencing...

As regards XXXXX XXXXX for the box ..the Mercedes 722.6 automatic transmission has a "Lifetime Fill" transmission fluid. That said we still recommend fluid and filter changes at 75,000 miles. The only fluid that should use in a fluid change is Genuine Mercedes Fluid. The part # XXXXX XXXXX 989 21 03 10. The transmission also has no dipstick for checking the fluid level...

Im just mentioning this - almost in passing - but oil / fluid problems have been known because of the use of incorrect "standard" ATF fluids being used by garages (non Benz)... just to make you aware in case...

If your local dealer is being particularly obstructive, I would suggest contacting their Tech dept on 00800 1(NNN) NNN-NNNN and ask to be put through to that dept. and then explain the troubles you are having - and the experience you are having with the local dealers. They are usually very interested in such issues and tend to be very helpful. After all, they are concerned about their reputation!
