why is there steam coming from my bonnet, could it just be it was heavily raining and making steam or could there be another problem?

This is almost certainly water that has got into your radiator from outside, ie rain water and spray from other vehicles. As your radiator gets hot, it evaporates as steam. Just to be on the safe side, check the water level in the plastic expansion box when the engine is cold.
