Does this trip the pump into running and register a fault code?
do you have the model number?

1. Yes , fault code is 3 short blips (anti flood system I beleive) . Once I drain water from the lower shelf machine can be used again. The problem is that I have to do this once per week which is obviously not normal2. AEG Favorit 35085 vi model

OK, in an ideal world this container would never have water in it, as the system is waterproof.
Over time, small leaks can occur and the water will go this container. If the container fills, it trips the fault code and the pump. It will not reset till the container is emptied.
You now have a leak keeps filling the container
Start a new cycle and lay on the floor with a torch. Look for where the water is leaking. You can then rectify the leak

I found the leak - on the right hand side of the back of the dishwasher (if you face it) water coming out of the top end of the pipe which seems to supply water into the machine.Pipe is plastic and seems to be integrated into the machineCan pipe be fixed?

OK, Im checking on the hose now. My guess is that it wont be available.
Even if it was, I would sugest that you should use some silicone bath seal around the hose where it meets the tub. This should seal any leaks there
