Hello,

Bosch Exxcel Dishwasher SGS5362GB which doesn't appear to pump the water to drive the cleaning bars around.

The motor is turning and the impellor reached via the little access hole on the right of the sump doesn't flow around and will turn manually and with a reasonable fit it feels.

There seems to be enough water in the sump - just covers the filter plate although in the plastic water feed fittings under the left side is a blockage above the top of the left pipe. Loks like a fat trap of some sort.

I can't tell if the impellor is running as obviously when I open the door it shuts off. Kinda feels like something has given further down line in the impellor drive system but maybe I am missing something.

Any idea's?

Hiya,

The motor you've been checking is the drain pump.

The motor that pumps water through the arms is the circulation pump.

The circulation pump is not accessible from inside the machine.

When it should be washing (after it fills with water), do you hear a hum instead?

What fat trap are you referring to?

Yes the drain pump motor works. That is the rotor revealed by removing the cover in the sump and is part of the cleaning procedure detailed in the hand book.

The circulation pump is accessed by removing the right hand cover of the machine. The pump sits at the bottom and the rotor can be turned. Furthermore the motor runs when a program is selected. So the circulation pump itself is just fine.

I guess there is a hum when it should be washing - coming from the circ pump I would guess. Also little programming clicks from the base area.

The fat trap looks like it is built into a complex labyrinthe of plastic plumbing that feeds water into the machine and sits behind the left hand cover of the washer. The top left hand area which appears to exit to atmosphere looks like it is blocked with fatty deposits but there doesn't appear to be any way to get to them short of disconnecting the five pipes it attaches too. The machine still fills happily with water which covers the filter screen so that the impellor is fully immersed.

Hiya,

OK, it's not a fat trap, it's a metering tank and if it's clogged with fat it's going to cause other problems.

I know where the drain pump is, I was advising that this pump has nothing to do with spraying water, I got the impression from your post that you thought that this motor did it all.

Unplug the appliance.

Look at the circulation motor.

At the end you'll see the "fan blades".

Can you turn the blades manually with a screwdriver?

Yes as per my last - the fan blades turn and the motor runs when a program is actuated.

I don't think water is pumped through the machine. The spray bar is not operating etc - but the impellor to the RIGHT of the sump which can just be accessed with finger tip seems to be ok in that it is not too loose or wobbly as I have read in some posts when it becomes disconnected from its drive plate.

Open the door quickly when the circulation pump is running.

Is there water coming through the arms?

Neither!

And have removed all arms and pipes to check for blockages.

OK, if no water, then the circulation motor is running but the impellor cannot be turning.

Either the motor shaft is snapped or the impellor isn't attached to the motor shaft.

Well that's what I thought but was grasping at straws in case I had missed something. But as I have parted with some wonga can you give me any idea what it would cost me to get in a repair agent who would then replace the impeller unit. If this is close to the cost of a new machine clearly I won 't bother. But it would be good to know.

Sorry, not great news but the British Gas offer is worth a try, there's no charge if they can't fix it.

Ok well that is cool. I didn't know about the british gas offer and the call out charge plus parts anywhere else would surely exceed 125. So thanks for that. Also might save my back and long hours of scrabbling around under an ancient dishwasher only to find I can't fix it. Will give it a go.

Advice on British Gas

Persuaded to join BG Appliance insurance. 75fee for call out. 16 a month for six appliances.

Booked visit by repair man. Never turned up. Flannel and lies from customer support.

Cancelled insurance with BG. Bought new dishwasher.

End of the matter. No more e mails please.
