Sorry for the delay in getting to your question.
If the pull cord isnt releaseing the door then you need to pull the washer out and take the top off.
From there look down the front on the inside and you will see the door lock.
Reach in there and give the top of the lock a push and should release the door.
If not then poking through the door lock is the pin.
You need to push the pin to the left and at the same time pull on the door and it should open.
Then once open you can then check the handle but from what you say it sounds like it has broken here and if so it will need to be replaced.

Ok if you get a new handle once you have taken the door rims off make a note of how the spring goes on the handle.
Take a picture of it so you can see it.
As once you take it off its hard to tell you online how it goes.
But you should be fine if you make a note of the direction on the spring.
