When it does this is the start light flashing?
If so then you need to count the number of flashes from it in between the pause and let me know.

6 flashes is a filling problem.
The first thing to make sure is the water supply is turned on and the water pressure is good.
If thats fine then you need to check the water valve. This is loacted at the back so you need to pull the dishwasher out and lay it on its back and remove the metal base. Then you can access the water valve. From there you need a multimeter and test the coil on there. The coil should read about 3.6 Kohms. If faulty then it will need to be replaced.
If the fill valve is fine then its possibley the filling tank on the left hand side. As in there is a flow meter and water wheel which turns as water enters the tank and the flow meter counts the pluses of water. If this is faulty then it will cause the fault you have now.
If this is the case then the plastic filling tank will need to be replaced to cure the fault here.
