I have a zanussi...

I have a zanussi fridge freezer model ZNB404W. Bought December 2007 it worked well for a year then the fridge started shutting down. The freezer continues to work properly.
The motor has been repaired at least 3 times but every few months or so the fridge just stops working for between 1 to 3 days then it resarts. This is usually preceeded by fridge leaking water for several days.
Has anyone else had this problem?

This model now discontinued. Is it a design fault? Is it worth the cost of repairing?

Ok when it works do you get any ice forming on the floor inside the freezer?

Or running down the back wall inside the fridge?

It is a frost free freezer.

Its ok i know its a frost free i justr wanted to know if there was ice foaming on the bottom of the freezer or the back wall.

I take it there isnt.

If you look at the top of the freezer you will see a vent. Shine a tourch in there and see if theres an ice build up in there.

Yes, I can see what looks like a bit of ice in between the vents. In the top part of freeer above first shelf there is also a very thin layer of frost.

Fridge is less than 5 years old.

Ok what this may be is either a defrost issue or a blocked drain.

If you pull the fridge out and look at the back you will see a black hose going into the drip tray on top of the cmpressor.

Pull the hose out of there and look in there. There you will see a white cap. Pull this off and see if water comes out of there. If so then in that white cap is a rubber valve. Prise this out and get rid of it. As what happens on these is the rubber valve sticks so it doesnt allow the water to drain out so it blocks up inside the freezer and jams the fan up.

So once this is clear retry the appliance and see how it goes from there.

If thats ok then its possible the defrost heater is the problem. But normally if this is the case it will just build up with to much ice and totally stops the fridge from working and wont work again untill the freezers been defrosted.

So check the drain hose at the back as you may just find this is the problem here.

Have cleared the back. It was gungy. Removed the white rubber vave from the white cap. Plugged it back in and the freezer is still showing correct 18 degree temp and the fridge is still showing a flat line for the temp that should be 5. The appliance is still silent. It putts for a few seconds when you turn it back on and then goes totally quiet.

This happened for first time when fridge was 13 months old.

Is it worth repair or is it a design fault?

Only a very little bit. There was already water in the pan that may have been there for a while as it was gungy. Only about 2 tablespoons of water in the drip tray.

It is now making slight clicking sounds. Is is likely to be turning itself back on again?

Ok if the drain was blocked or ice jamming the fan up inside the freezer then it will need to be fully defrosted.

Try defrosting it for 24 hours and keep the freezer door open and see if this gets it going again.

If it does then great it may have been a draining problem. And it should start to work from there.

But if it does it again then it will be a defrost issue which may be a faulty defrost heater. which would need to be replaced and hopefully this will cure the problem here.
