ok, but the pump noise stops when you open the door?

please pour a bowl of water into the machine, close the door, wait a few seconds for the pump noise. Open door, what has happened to the water?
Customer:
The pump has emptied the water from the bottom of the dishwasher

It sounds like the machine has water in the base, where the pumps are.
This sets the flood guard and the discharge pump will run continuously in an effort to protect the electrics in the base.
Turn off the electric.
Pull machine forward.
Put towels down behind the machine.
Tilt machine back at 45 degrees.
Water will come out the back.
The machine should now be reset.
If this re occurs you have a leak and will need to find it and rectify it .

Many thanks for this advice but unfortunately the dishwasher is an integrated one so we cannot just pull it out. I assume we will need to call someone out to do this?

Its up to you, even integrated machines have to come in and out

There is a stainless steel skirting which is removeable - have done this

OK, so can you now see into the base of the DW?

The dishwasher is raised up on legs. The base has a central brown plastic cover to what I assume is an entry to the bottom of the machine

yes, you need to remove that, turn off the mains first !!

Have removed panel - packed behind with electrics and plastic 'boxes'.

in there you will see there is a tray that has water in it. You need to dry this out carefully. This is the same as tipping it back. The float in there will reset. BUT if it does it agian you have a leak, as per my message above
