Ok sounds like it may be a blocked dispenser roof. So what happens if the holes in the roof are blocked up the water looks for another way into the soap box. So it may come through the softner section.
What you can try is pull the drawer out and use a scrubbing brush and give the roof a good clean inside the soap box.
Then get something and poke it into the holes in the roof to clear them.
Then retry the washer and see how it goes from there.
