My hotpoint VTD00P is not happy and is now blowing the fuse…

My hotpoint VTD00P is not...

My hotpoint VTD00P is not happy and is now blowing the fuse on the house trip switch each time it is switched on. I replaced the timer a few months ago as the clock was "skipping" and thought I'd sorted the problem. The drum has also started to "grate" - when the machine is not blowing a fuse! Help?

Hiya,

Unplug the dryer.

Take the bulged panel on the rear off.

Have a close look at the heater, is it broken? shorting?

Is there signs of moisture there?

The dryer is still heating as in the few minutes it runs before shorting; the air inside the dryer definitely warms up - condenses on the door if left closed! The filter on the front of the door is cleared each time I use the dryer, so hopefully the hose is not fluffed up too much. No other sign of moisture external to the drum and wet clothes.

I have now removed said cover and everything is bone dry. Nothing to indicate that this is where the problem is.

Take the top and right side panel off (viewed from the front).

We need to find out why the drum is scraping and whether it's worn into wiring or not.

Um have managed to crack an element in the heater thingy. I guess I've probably "killed" it in terms of overall repair costs? Is it still worth persuing this?

Hiya,

OK, is the element snapped or is it just the backing?

If it's just the backing, then the heater should still work.

We need to determine if there is damaged wiring or if it's the motor that's tripping the mains.

Is it tripping an RCD or and MCB in the fuse box?

The machine trips the main RCCD switch on a consumer unit box. Have not managed to get the side off the machine as yet. Do I still need to attempt this?
The element of the heater is actually broken - I think I dislodged a crack and just completed the damage. However, as the heater was working before I unplugged it, I can be fairly confident that it was OK before I touched it.

Hiya,

It really depends on how much you are prepared to pay to repair the appliance.

The grinding noise we need to locate the source of that, it could be bearings or even the drum shaft and then we need to determine the cause of the tripping.

Thanks for your help. I think at this point we will just say "goodbye" to what has been a hard working machine. Would you recommend any particular brand to go for?
Is there a brand you repeatedly get queries or problems with?

Hiya,

Hotpoint is actually Indesit. Indesit own the Hotpoint, Creda brands and I wouldn't have them I'm afraid.

The one that has lasted me longest and has been cheapest for parts is White Knight.

The downside is, they tend to be a bit noisier than other makes.

Other than that, I don't really see a dryer that stands out with no problems.

The electronic ones seem to suffer a lot of problems.

The more basic the design and simpler the use the better.
