As I've never had the back off a washing machine before this, where is the motor and how do I remove it. Most of all, is it easy to remove and to put it back??

Re my reply to the original answer. Is there anything you could advise so I might be able to get to the motor and do the replacement. For example, is it easy to work out what it is and do I have to remove it from the washer completely in order to replace the brushes etc.

Following your reply, I've managed to get the motor off (together with a scrape from my thumb knuckle nearly to my wrist!), and replaced the brushes as suggested.

Now the various washes seem to run OK as before but still never complete as before. They still stop at spin time with no emptying of the drum. So unless the brushes haven't been fitted properly or the programmer is messed up this hasn't worked as hoped and I'm looking at wet floors again.

My wife is now looking intently at the Argos catalogue but having recently been made redundant and being at an age where the job market is very shallow despite much experience and skill, I'd rather this had worked. Is there anything else you can suggest before I have to bite the bullet?

Yes, it is full of water when it stops on any programme - mind you, remember that currently no programme finishes and the dial is just turned to another one to see if we can get one to finish. But it does re-start and then goes through it but doesn't complete. Drum is full of water and no spin happens. There is no "spin only" programme on this washer so cannot test that alone.

I'll have to have a go tomorrow now with what you suggest. So I'll let you know what happens.

As mentioned, yesterday's wash did the usual i.e. doing the wash cycle but stopping close to the end with the water still in it and no spin cycle started. I managed to get rid of the water via the normal waste pipe by unhooking it and using a large bucket. Actually, there was no problems in getting it to do that. I guess that proves there is no problem with the waste hose anyway. Then I did what you said i.e. removed the front strip and removed what water there was from there, checked the small impeller/propeller. That moved OK.

I then put it all back together again and tried it. No change in the result though i.e. it stopped close to the end with a full drum of water and no spin cycle started.

So with new brushes hopefully installed properly (the only thing I can have any doubts about), a clean filter etc and it's all just the same as when I started.

Is there anymore you can advise at all???

Just to continue the previous update..

As I can empty the drum just by taking the waste pipe off the Sink unit U bend and using a bucket, I guess that means it isn't a blockage. And, having checked the filter as you suggested (which looks OK), the only thing left is the pump itself.

Unless fixing or replacing this is both easy to do and cheap, I guess it's a new machine
