My Hotpoint FF187 FridgeFreezer has...

My Hotpoint FF187 FridgeFreezer has a problem. The door open alarm comes on when the door is shut. Eventually the fridge has stopped working, though the freezer works ok. Is there a door sensor somewhere, or is it a temperature sensor that senses the open door?

Hi, yes the freezer is ok. The fan that is in the freezer unit is definitely running. I don't know if that fan is for the fridge also.

Sorry... meant to say also that the compressor is hot.

How the fridge gets its cooling form is from the freezer. The fan in there blows it up in to the fridge. The most likley cause of this fault is a blocked evaportor in the freezer.

Stopping the air flow up into the fridge.

What you can do is either unplug the machine for 24 hours with the freezer door open.

Or if you remove the baskets in the freezer and remove the back panel from there you will see the evaporator if blocked with ice you can use a wall paper steamer to defrost it.

Do not hack at the ice as you will damage the pipe work in there.

Then when fully defrosted retry and hopefully should be back to normal.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have a look to see if that's blocked. Just before I accept your answer so that you get paid, why do you think the door open alarm is going off? Is this just triggered by a higher temperature in the fridge, rather than a door sensor alarm? (Or maybe I'm interpreting the alarm wrong, and it's just a high temperature, but I don't quite understand this as it goes on shortly after stopping and re-starting the fridge which doesn't make sense unless there's some 'memory' function.)

Thats telling you theres somthing wrong with the appliance thats why its flashing.

Check the freezer and let me know what you find.

Ok we've had a look at the freezer, taken the back panel off as suggested. There is a bit more ice than expected for a "FrostFree" fridge freezer but the evaporator doesn't look too blocked and there seems to be a clear pathway to the duct to the fridge.

The fridge and freezer have separate temperature controls, and there seems to be a motored flap in the fridge that I assume lets in the cold air. Maybe if we force that open we'll get a cold fridge. Hmmm.

Ok if the evaporator is ok then check the damper in the fridge it should be open so check this out.

Remove the damper from there and when its warm it should open up.

When cold it closes. so if closed warm the sensor on it up it should then open.

Then put in freezer for a few minutes and it should close.

How much ice was on the evaporator? Was the ice blocking the grills on the evaporator?

aha, thanks for your help, this is looking like the problem - it's forced open at the moment and the fridge is getting cold - looks like there might be a problem with the sensor on that.

The ice wasn't blocking the grills, no, there was just a little on it.

If youve opened the damper and the air is now flowing then just keep an eye on it. If does it again then you might need to replace the damper.
