Mu remote stopped working, I only use it for the input

Mu remote stopped working, I only use it for the input change to watch a dvd. I put in new batteries but it's still dead. Do I need a new one?
JA: What's the model number of your TV? How old is it?
Customer: I haven't a clue, it's a few years old, where do i look for it bearing in mind I'm 83 yr. old.
JA: Does the TV menu work? Do you have the same problem on all sources/inputs?
Customer: My menu is with Cox and I only use your remote for the input change. Everything else through Cox works fine, they said to call you.
JA: How long has this been an issue? What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: It was instantly with no forewarning, worked then didn't
