I have a Samsung PN42A450...

I have a Samsung PN42A450 42" Plasma HDTV, purchased in January of 2009. Yesterday, there was a sound like an electrical short, then the TV went blank. In a minute, or so, the picture returned, then this repeated on and off every few minutes. In about an hour, the TV went blank and remained off. I unplugged the power to the TV and after about 30 minutes, it was connected again and the picture returned. Today the picture returned as normal, but then off and on.

I would appreciate your assistance!!

Did the problem occur during a storm or power surge?

When the picture goes off and on, does the power light on the front of the set blink?

Also, was the sound you heard like a gunshot noise?

There was no storm in the immediate area yesterday.

The last time the picture went off, the power light was off. Then the light begin to blink, then went off when the picture returned.

Yesterday, when the problem started, the sound was like a gunshot for the first few times, then no noise before going blank.

This indicates a failure within the TV.

I do not plan on repairing the TV myself. I would like a diagnosis and repair estimate.

I actually found some information about this problem which will be of help to you.

What you're having is the infamous Samsung capacitor failure. They were using sub-par caps in the power supply, which failed prematurely. Samsung has been covering this failure for all of their customers even outside of warranty.

This is the most common mode of failure for these sets.

The capacitors are located on the power board inside the set, where the AC cord plugs into. Unfortunately there is no sequence of buttons or reset you can perform to get the set working again.

Please contact Samsung at the number below to have them send a tech out to fix the problem. Remember they will fix this for free:
