hi, i have a 2014 Ford F150 2wd, 5.0 liter with a transmission 6r80 and showing code p0770 shift solenoid E malfunction permanent. it started with some jolts from 3rd to 4th once in a while. lately it gets stuck in the 3rd gear only and clunks when put in reverse or Drive. After it sits a while it runs normally again but not for long. the shop said oil looks good and is level. i did some reading online but i would appreciate your opinion too. thx

Ask Your Own Transmissions Question

Rougly how many miles are present on the vehicle?

Ask Your Own Transmissions Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
67,000

The symptom you are experiencing is usually caused by a faulty shift solenoid E located it the transmission valve body. There are other possibilities like a faulty valve body, faulty transmission control module, damaged/short in wiring or debris stuck in the shift solenoid E but faulty siolenoid is the most common issue. Two ways to test the solenoid. One activating it with a compatible scan tool and second is by removing the solenoid and testing it with a test light/ multimeter.

Attached illustration shows the transmission valve body and #10 is Solenoid E

What are the values one should read with the multimeter or is that another question?
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Also does the valve body need to be removed in order to remove the shift solenoid E ?

Shift solenoid E specs 17.5 to 18.6 Ohms. The valve body will need to be removed to test the solenoid if scan tool is not available.

do you think it may help to drop the pan and change the oil in there 4-5 qt and just put in a new filter? it doesn't do it all the time but more and more often. there's a good chance there are particles only?

No. If it was fluid/ filter related issue multiple solenoids would have acted up. Since it is one specific solenoid that's acting up the problem is in that solenoid's circuit.

Sir. using the scan tool can tell if solenoid E is bad? how would i know if electrical contacts are bad? can the electrical contacts be cleaned?
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
i meant harness/electrical contact points for shift solenoid E

Using a compatible scan tool you can manually command the solenoid E to turn on/ off. If no response problem is in the solenoid or connector. It is very unlikely to have damaged connector or dirty wiring at such low miles. So i'm leaning more towards a faulty solenoid.

don't mean to split the hairs but if it acts up only sometimes can i still test it with the scan tool or do i need to take it off and measure resistance?

With an intermitten issue proper way is to remove and check the resistance
