Customer Question
I have a 2010...

I have a 2010 Elantra Touring manual transmission. Many times the shifter goes into third gear rather than first. I have taken it to the dealer twice. They say it's a lubrification issue. But now say will need to replace the transmisson. What do I do?

Mechanic's Assistant: Has the clutch been slipping? Are you having any trouble shifting?

No slipping at all

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Elantra Touring yourself? What have you tried so far?

I tried the dealership.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Sometimes it's smooth other times it just won't go into first. like it can't find it.

Hello my name is***** you try putting it into first does it just feel like the shifter will not move into that gear? Does it feel like it is blocked out?

exactly
Transmission Mechanic: Fix_It_Man, Repair Supervisor replied 7 months ago

Thank you. There is actually a locking lever in the transmission that keeps you from going directly into first under certain conditions. This lever, or the spring that controls it breaks and causes this. The entire transmission does not need to be replaced to fix this but it does need to partially be taken apart. It can be more serious but not that likely. I would get a second opinion from a transmission repair facility of I were you.
