It is a 2004...

It is a 2004 XJ8 that has shown "Transmission Fault" on the instrument display. Once with nothing happening out of the ordinary and once where it didn't want to shift from 2nd gear when accelerating. I parked and restarted the car and that was two weeks ago but it is running normally. I took it to a local shop and was told there were two codes. P0651 & P0829. But am being told everything from flashing the TCM to throttle body replacement to re-programming to rebuilding the transmission.

Mechanic's Assistant: How old is the transmission? Have you checked the brake switch?

The transmission is the original and the car currently has 66k miles on it. Brake switch?

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your XJ8 yourself? What have you tried so far?

I am not fixing it myself. So far I assumed it was a transmission repair which is beyond my skill level. I have taken it to a local shop i have gone to in the past which is where I was told what I mentioned above. Are you saying the brake pedal switch may have something to do with this?

both can be mechanical or an issue with TCM valve body. We first need to check the fluid level and condition. Since there is no dipstick we cannot easily check fluid level. This done by removing the fill/level plug on the side of the transmission with the engine running and fluid warmed to temp with the vehicle on a level surface or lift.

We may have a leak from the fluid pan, connector, or cooler pipes.Once the fluid is checked we can continue.
