Installed new clutch in Pontiac Vibe. Shifts OK into first, but grinds trying to get into reverse. If the fork is pried about 3/4 of an inch further than the slave cylinder will push it, there is no problem getting in to reverse.

Also there is a new slave cylinder installed and the system is completely bled.
Customer reply replied 10 months ago
Observing the slave cylinder piston,by removing the boot, I can see that it is at it's maximum travel.

Good morning,

First I would try bleeding the system again to see if maybe some air is trapped causing the slave cylinder to not travel far enough.

If that doesn't work then I would assume either the master cylinder or slave cylinder needs to be replaced. There is really no way to adjust the clutch fork travel on this model.

When replacing the clutch did you replace the slave cylinder at the same time?

Also, what year model is this Vibe?

Ask Your Own Transmissions Question

2007 Vibe The system is completely bled. New Slave was installed. As I said , by removing the rubber boot, I was able to determine that the slave was at full extension.
Transmission Mechanic: Jared D, ASE Master Mechanic replied 10 months ago

If it's fully extended and still not long enough then I would suspect either the slave cylinder to be faulty or incorrect for this vehicle, or the flywheel was machined too thin.

We've seen a ton of aftermarket clutch parts on these cars not fit correctly. Also one time on a toyota matrix (pretty much the same vehicle) we found a bent clutch fork.

What brand of parts were used?

I hear what your saying. Right now I am installing a new higher quality clutch. Hopefully that will resolve the issue. Chinese made junk sometimes is not worth the aggravation, if ever. Thanx Bob C.
Transmission Mechanic: Jared D, ASE Master Mechanic replied 10 months ago

I'm thinking that's probably what's going on. If you have the old parts lying around still I would compare them to the new. Make sure the pressure plate is the same thickness, push rod on the slave is the same, etc.
