Grinding noise when shifting into (or out of) reverse,

Customer Question

grinding noise when shifting into (or out of) reverse
JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: Guessing the transmission hard to say, it is very intermittent. Been going on for a few months. It is a 2007 Pilot 4WD.
JA: Are you fixing your Pilot yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Have done nothing so far. Will fix it myself if not too difficult (e.g. trans rebuild).
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: no

Have you checked for any metal shavings present on the transmission fluid dipstick?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No shavings present, ATF is very clean on the dipstick. I have put 50,000 miles on the Pilot since I bought it in 4 years ago. I changed the ATF after I put 5,000 miles on it, then 30,000 miles after that. The current ATF has 15,000 miles on it.

Have you checked the motor mounts?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No. How would I do that?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
This video shows a mechanic putting a Pilot in gear and revving the engine to show a bad motor mount, would that be good to try? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ilw45aQ4GM
Expert:  Gunvir Singh replied 1 month ago.

Each mount will need to be checked individually if has any play.

Expert:  Gunvir Singh replied 1 month ago.

That video is useful if the front or side mount. If the noise is present in reverse, it is possible that rear mount or transmission mount is faulty.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Just did the test and could not get the noise. Did not have not have much engine movement when revving in drive or reverse with foot on the brake. Looked more like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j2n9Y_fp1AI can check all mounts with a pry bar tomorrow.
Expert:  Gunvir Singh replied 1 month ago.

Prybar check will be better. Keep me posted.
