2002 Ram 1500 QC 5.9L Automatic, 195k on it. Intermittently

Customer Question

2002 Ram 1500 QC 5.9L Automatic, 195k on it. Intermittently shifts hard. Goes up to 3k RPM before shifting. Not all the time but intermittently. All gears seem to work though. Any thoughts?
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you noticed any leaking?
Customer: It's 14 years old I would guess. No leaks
JA: Are you fixing your Ram 1500 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes. Haven't tried anything yet.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No, that's it. Thanks

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

There are a handful of things that could cause the trans to shift hard or hold upshifts for too long. The RPM at which it shifts is dependent on throttle angle and 3,000 RPM or even all the way to the redline isn't abnormal but I'm assuming you're accustomed to the truck and you're feeling something it hasn't done before.

Te first step in diagnosing the problem is to use a scan tool to see if any fault codes are setting. Have you checked for codes?
