My 1993 Eclipse with auto trans seams to be in fail safe

Customer Question

My 1993 Eclipse with auto trans seams to be in fail safe mode. It only has 2nd gear (?) and does not shift. it only has 30,000 miles on it and fluid is full and pink. no noise.
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you checked the brake switch?
Customer: the transmission is origional and I have not checked brake switch
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I'm trying to find out what is wrong. Would fix myself if it is reasonably simple
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: It starts like your in a higher gear from the start (needs more gas little power)

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

It does sound as if the trans is in limp in. If the trans controller sees an issue that will prevent operation it will lock you in second gear, or if the controller isn't awake for some reason it will give the same symptoms. You could have a wiring, solenoid, speed sensor, range sensor or TCM issue, or the TCM may be missing power or ground. It's also possible that the issue is internal in the trans.

Did the problem start after an accident, any work was done, etc?
