I have a 2003 nissan altima the transmission wont shift up

Customer Question

i have a 2003 nissan altima the transmission wont shift up from 1st gear. i had that problem once before and replaced both speed sensors and it worked foa a couple weeks but again wont shift up. i might add that at the same time i now have no high beam headlights though the high beam indicator lights up. im hoping the 2 have a common denominator. the main problem is i only have reverse and 1st gear operating. like i said both sensors have been replaced

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

It sounds as if the transmission is in limp in. when the trans controller sees an issue that will prevent correct operation it will set fault codes and lock you in a single gear.

There are many possible causes ranging from the speed sensors to solenoids, wiring, internal trans issues, the range sensor, or it's possible the TCM itself is failing or losing a power or ground feed.

The first step in diagnosing the problem is to use a scan tool or code reader to see what fault codes re setting in the TCM. Do you know what codes are setting?
