Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

If the transmission engages for a period and then disengages, but engages again after a cooldown period that points to a restricted filter. The filter is most likely restricted with debris which could be from a clutch or geartrain failure or just from lack of periodic maintenance. It would be helpful to know what codes are setting, but the first thing that will need to be done based on these symptoms is remove the pan and inspect for clutch/geartrain debris, if there is no excessive debris then replacing the filter and fluid will likely take care of the issue.
